In an interview about the Gabriel Network, Founder Jim Sharbaugh said, “All we want to do is provide Christian charity. The second greatest commandment is 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' We see these women and their unborn children as our neighbor. We let them know there's someone here who believes in them. We listen.”

Jim, a graduate of Saint Benedict and Bishop Carroll, passed away unexpectedly on September 22 at the age of 69. He leaves quite a legacy in the Gabriel Network. After many years teaching comparative religions at La Reine High School in Suitland, Maryland, he founded the Gabriel Project (now called the Gabriel Network). The non-profit, pro-life organization offers essential support to women in crisis pregnancy by providing food, shelter, and stability. The organization offers an alternative to abortion and a future for the mother and child.

Jim’s vision to “save the babies” by helping countless mothers has resulted in many lives.

Jim was living in Sun City Center, Florida with his loving wife Susan (née Hartle). He is also survived by their son Joel. Jim attended Saint Benedict for grade school then went on to Bishop Carroll. After graduating from Bishop Carroll, he attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) and the University of Maryland. His academic career culminated in a Master’s degree in religious studies granted by Notre Dame Pontifical Catechetical Institute in Arlington, VA.

The Gabriel Network’s name comes from the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke, in which the angel Gabriel tells Mary she is to be the mother of Jesus and comforts her, saying, “Be not afraid. Nothing is impossible with God.”
